County’s teen environmental education program.

The initiative leverages the marketing and media savvy of today’s teens, to put them in charge of educating their peers about litter and stormwater pollution issues in Los Angeles County.

Students are encouraged to develop a social marketing campaign in their school focusing on specific school issues, using events, print materials, web and what have you to get the word out. A jury of teachers and marketing professionals will choose the best campaigns, and the winners will get awesome recognition and a free field trip.

Goodstuff created the name and graphic vibe for the initiative, designed mailers, posters and flyers, and updated the GenerationEarth website to highlight the new program.

The greenest thing about Superbowl XLV, besides the field, will not be the ads. In Business Insider’s pre-game round up of the best ads for the game, only the Chevy Cruze “misunderstanding” ad has any environmental message whatsoever. But, while the key message is that the Chevy Cruze Eco boasts 42 mpg mileage, the concept is floated through some well-trodden senior-bashing comedy shtick. Oh, good for them, I guess!

The better news is that the Dallas stadium where the game will be held raises the bar for ecologically-sensitive sporting arenas–to the degree that it is possible for a new development, or a gathering of tens of thousands of people, to be eco-sensitive. Seems that the development of the new arena was tied in to habitat and watershed restoration that had been needed for years. I hope it’s true, and I hope that the wildlife has a great tailgate party!

Happy New year! Goodstuff is turning it up to ‘11 with our first site launch of the year. BoundforGloryTextiles.com is the online headquarters of Maine-based fiber artist Kelley Smith Barham. As a card-carrying member of the Eco Fashion movement, Kelley creates cloth that is healthy for the planet, promotes local economies, and is fun to wear!

Our focus with the site was to let the visuals tell the story, so we went widescreen and did photo shoots in cool Maine locations: a giant, 150-yr-old barn, and a sunset by the sea. We wanted to get visitors up close with this amazing work in some authentic locations. With website design for Maine businesses, it’s a good idea to show the beauty of Maine. Enjoy!

Add this project to our file on marketing and design for environmental non-profits: TreePeople’s Cooldown series. These two books are the frontline for TreePeople’s teen environmental education brand, and offer up a vibe that is edgier than Magical City Forest (which leverages TreePeople’s elementary brand look, designed by Goodstuff). While Campus Cooldown is for school and Community Cooldown for home, each book promotes the benefits of trees to the urban environment, and guide teens through the process of designing and planting shade areas. Hot off the presses and cooling things down!
We deeply support the important work of Doctors Sarah Ackerly and Josie Skavdahl., and we had a great experience teaming with them to get the word out on Northern Sun.

Northern Sun provides naturopathic healthcare and midwifery services, including home birth, for southern and midcoast Maine.

Our core strategy in developing marketing communications and websites for healthcare practitioners is that patients want to know and like their caregivers. So, while the site needs to look nice and function perfectly, it really needs to get out of the way so folks can experience a simulated meet and greet. For alternative modalities, marketing communications need to do extra work in explaining and selling the category as a means to attract new patients.

For Northern Sun we started the doctor/patient relationship and answered common patient questions online, through doctor bios, robust background information on naturopathy and midwifery, and information from existing patients in the form of testimonials, image galleries and birth stories. .

Enjoy!

Do you keep getting facebook status reports about friends buying a cow in FarmVille? You may pity these folks, but they belong to a group of some 20 million people that enters this virtual agri-realm daily.

So now, the marketers at Cascadian Farms will be educating those 20 million people about the benefits of organics in the real world, following in the footsteps of fellow General Mills brand Green Giant.

In May, Green Giant Fresh placed coded stickers on fresh veggies sold at Target stores across the U.S., each sticker redeemable at TheGiant.com for free “farm cash” units (fake money that players use in FarmVille that often costs real money). Five weeks and $100k worth of farm cash units later, they realized they were driving actual sales with virtual reality.

Cascadian Farms is playing a different angle by offering all players–for one week this July– a crop that can be harvested faster and bring a bigger cash return than other crops. That must be organics!

Vish Makhijani, senior vice president for business operations at Zynga (the company that created FarmVille as well as Mafia Wars and FrontierVille), said that this is FarmVille’s “first branded, in-game crop integration, and we chose Cascadian Farm to offer our users something that would benefit them online and offline.”

As social media brands like Zynga learn how to monetize the popularity of their properties, it is nice to see a net-positive brand leading the pack of advertisers. I guess organic farmers are innovative in both realities.
